Hike the Red Centre

The Larapinta Trail

{0 Comments}

Finally completed in 2002 and running a total of 223-kilometres, the Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges presents the essence of the parched, striking outback – up front and centre. Commencing in Alice Springs, the Larapinta Trail is a rugged path that cuts through striking rocky ridges, creeks, canyons, bone-dry riverbeds, and dense bush. Guided by trail experts and hosted in three semi-permanent bush camps, Australian Walking Holidays (a division of the World Expeditions Travel Group) allows anyone in modest physical shape to experience the sheer joy of bush walking, and to revel in the unmistakable magic that permeates central Australia.

Where to Stay :
You will stay exclusive semi‐permanent wilderness campsites, with comfortable safari tents set up and stretcher beds, mattresses and pillows awaiting in your swag. Sleeping bags can be hired or you can bring your own. The eco-toilets are clean and comfortable, and a solar shower ensures there are hot showers every day. It's by no means luxury but considering hikers have to pack everything in and out and have no access to showers at all, it's very much appreciated!

Getting There :
The trek departs from and returns to Alice Springs.

Note from Robin :
This is easily a Top 3 highlight on my bucket list, and definitely for those who enjoy the outdoors. The fact that you only have to carry a day pack with your essentials means there's less hassle and physical strain and more "wow, look at that view!" Each day is unique. The full trek - which would take about 2 weeks - is condensed into the best bits. The cultural additions, from learning about bush food to indigenous culture at Standley Chasm, is fantastic too. I found walking sticks to be helpful but that's a matter of taste. Stock up on beer and wine beforehand, you'll appreciate it at the end of the day. It does get chilly at night so layers are essential. There is no cell signal which is a welcome respite from the modern world. With World Expeditions, you're in very capable and professional hands. Speaking of which, don't touch the spinifex!
